A man drives to a house, walks in and while two of the family watch, he shoots a third. He walks back to his car and we see his face - it is Mulder. [This scene occurred a week before Mulder disappeared.]
Doggett arrives in town on the trail of Mulder. He wants to know why Mulder returned there just before he disappeared. He questions the family, from the house, and they deny that Mulder returned.
When he searches Mulder's apartment, he finds a gun concealed under the sink. He confronts Skinner about Mulder's falsified reports and the blood on the gun.
The locals confront the family and a man runs out of the house. The locals chase and capture him.
Doggett returns with Skinner. They have records of an man who was found dead the day after Mulder was there. They investigate the grave, find out it has just been dug up and that the victim - the man Mulder shot - tunnelled out of his own grave.
The sheriff returns the captured man to the house to perform a ritual. Skinner and Doggett arrive at the house to find the wife missing and blood on the floor.
The Lone Gunmen are called in to explain a symbol found on the grave and on the door of the house. Doggett talks to the woman who found the body of the man, when he was dead, and he finds the wife in a tunnel under the woman's house.
The man, the "soul eater", has cured the wife's kidneys. The man cures people by absorbing their diseases into himself.
Mulder had gone to the town so that it could save his life. When Mulder saw the man's pain, he tried to kill him and put him out of his misery.
Doggett is about to take the man away to safety when the sheriff and his deputies turn up to stop him. They shoot and kill Doggett to stop him taking the man, who disappears.
They bury Doggett and leave. Doggett wakes up, alive. The "soul eater" has absorbed Doggett's death, curing Doggett and giving itself the death it wanted.
Doggett does not know what to write in his case report. Skinner tells him not to write one.
